Autumn Equinox Celebration

Autumn Equinox Celebration

Come join us in sacred community to celebrate the Autumnal Equinox! The Fall “celebrates the second harvest and the start of winter preparations. It is the time to respect the impending dark while giving thanks to the sunlight.” We will set our intentions through the magic of the Tarot, do a honoring ritual, call in the seven directions, perform an invocation and a releasing ritual. **We will be having a fire so if you have a sensitivity to smoke please note these will be the conditions of the ritual.

Some ideas to heighten the experience,

*Bring an offering for the alter a crystal, stone, feather, poem, confession, a flower, a herb or whatever your heart desires. Know you can take these items home after.

*Dress in something devotional if that feels right for you.

*Write down a passage or confession that you'd like to offer to the ritual and ceremony.

What is the Autumnal Equinox?

The autumnal equinox happens the moment the sun crosses the celestial equator, which is an imaginary line in the sky that corresponds to Earth’s equator.

“Equinox” comes from the Latin words “equi” meaning “equal” and “nox” meaning “night.” This implies that there will be equal amounts of daylight and darkness, however such is not exactly the case.

There are two equinoxes annually, vernal and autumnal, marking the beginning of spring and fall. They are opposite for the northern and southern hemispheres.

In China the September equinox is celebrated during the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival. The bounty of summer’s harvest is celebrated and the festivities are rampant with moon cakes, round pastries made from bean paste and other sweet and/or savory ingredients.

Timeless Self * Workshop with Amadia Shadow Rabbit

"In this workshop I'll guide participants thru active exploration of the relationship to & communication with parts of our selves existing across time; utilizing a combination of creative therapy, hypnotherapy, transpersonal psychotherapy, & imaginal conjuring methods.

Beyond our current perceived ages, our psyche is in fact comprised of a very nonlinear complex of perinatal, infant, child, adolescent, adult, & elder psychology, developed at varying stages along our lifetimes. We also carry projected images of our future selves. Our subconscious mind provides a timeless access to these many facets of inner worlds.

I'll share some of the fascinating psychological research done on this topic, more ancient practices of inner journeying, then lead us thru several exercises where we will revisit & communicate withyounger versions of ourself that may hold important information for your present, or may need assistance with healing to enable integration with your current sense of self. We will also experiment with envisioning & contacting our future elder selves, opening to their guidance in the forms of wisdom or foresight that may be useful "North Stars" down our paths."  ~Amadia Shadow Rabbit

Amadia Shadow Rabbit is a southern conjurer, now based in the bay, who's magick practice and craft focus on Communing with Spirits of the Natural World, Dream Work, Creativity and Sacred Drag as Divine Play, Shadow Work, Using Divination and Hypnotherapy to access other realms, gain insight into the forces in our lives, and regain the knowledge of our souls across lifetimes.

She has studied, taught, and practiced tarot and other forms of divination for over a decade.

Splendor All Around Show

Splendor All Around is a collective of musicians, artists, technicians and documentarians that performs and tours in a 1986 International diesel school bus called Splendor.  Splendor has taken three extended tours along the West Coast, breaking down numerous times and playing over 50 shows in caves, driveways, squat houses, churches, and, of course, the bus.  Hosting numerous traveling artists, Splendor All Around consists of a core of ~20 artists primarily from the SF Bay Area, South East and New York City.

In 2016, Splendor All Around will be releasing a documentary feature covering the first three tours.  Our hope is to pioneer an artist-friendly hack to the music-industrial complex– laying out big maps, cutting through the Rocky Mountains, and bringing Splendor to the Eastern seaboard. Look for us in the American South West this Fall!

ALCATRAZ TAROT SALON - XVII THE MOON

In this Tarot based workshop we will focus on one of the three cosmic Major Arcana- The Moon. In the Tarot and most occult schools of wisdom, the Moon represents our Mercurial Inner Worlds- often untapped emotional depths, dream worlds, shadow selves moving always in the potent sea of subconscious truth. The Moon represents what is cyclical yet constant in life. The Moon also holds Divine Goddess/ Elder Femme wisdom we all carry within and call on in times of need. The Moon illuminates what is often hidden, calls forth the spirits of darkness to tell their stories upon the velvet carpet of midnight.

We will discuss the role of the archetypal Moon in the tarot, engage in a few workshop exercises, trade Moon based readings, and end in a guided meditation at Empress Vintage.

FOR MODERATE TO ADVANCED EXPERIENCED TAROT READERS. This event is not an introductory class or to offer readings to the public.

Summer Solstice Celebration

Come join us in scared community to celebrate the summer solstice! The summer solstice is one of the most powerful days to celebrate and honor your solar power and the light within you. We will set our intentions through the magic of the Tarot, do a manifestation ritual, call in the four directions, perform an invocation and a releasing ritual. **We will be having a fire so if you have a sensitivity to smoke please note these will be the conditions of the ritual.

*Dress in something devotional if that feels right for you.

*Write down a passage or confession that you'd like to offer to the ritual and ceremony.

What is the Summer Solstice?

The timing of the solstice depends on when the Sun reaches its northernmost point from the equator. The word solstice is from the Latin solstitium, from sol (sun) and stitium (to stop), reflecting the fact that the Sun appears to stop at this time (and again at the winter solstice).

The summer solstice ritual is one of the most popular events I host each year pre-registration is highly encouraged. register here: http://laurazuspan.bigcartel.com/product/summer-solstice-celebrationhttp://laurazuspan.bigcartel.com/product/summer-solstice-celebration

KID TRAILS

Oakland's Kid Trails is the brainchild of Oakland's Patrick Jeffords, who writes and performs all instruments for Kid Trails, with the exception of drums, which are handled by Andy Woodward. Jeffords moved to Oakland about two years to make music with some high profile friends in the local scene, but I'll let the quality of his work stand on its own for now. Kid Trails makes fuzzy, dark pop that sounds not quite like anything out there today, although it did make me think of that great Edwyn Collins track from 20 years ago.

Vintage, Tea & Tarot in the Empress Garden featuring Star Sight Tarot

JOIN US on Saturday, 12pm-4pm!  We will be serving Niuka Tea and having a big sale in the garden!  Plus Tarot readings by Star Sight Tarot!  Can't wait to see you there!

I use the tarot as a transformative tool for discernment, practical advice, and empowerment. I've been reading tarot for over 10 years and consider myself to be of the "new generation" of tarot readers who do not claim to be psychic, but instead help clients to make their own choices and come to their own conclusions about their life paths through the mediating assistance of the tarot and other practices.

Star sights are measurements taken between a star and the horizon that help travelers to navigate over land and sea. I use the tarot in a similar way - as a navigational tool that helps to keep us on course when we feel we've gone astray.

MOTHER DRUM Workshop in The Empress Garden

Mother Drum Teaching & Session  ~  Sunday, April 9, 2-4 p.m.

Led by Earthen Moon (Jamie Allen & Alison Holmes)

Empress Vintage, 1757 Alcatraz Avenue, Berkeley, CA

$15-30 sliding scale; no one turned away for lack of funds

Every beat of a drum echoes the beat of a heart and has the power to take us back to the first sound we heard, in the womb – our mother’s own heartbeat. The drumbeat can take us on many powerful journeys when we slow down, breathe and listen with our whole selves.

A Mother Drum (sometimes called a Council or People’s Drum) is big enough for several people to sit around and play together simultaneously. Playing a Mother Drum with a group of people is a centering and unifying experience.

Our Mother Drum comes from the Ojibwe people of northern Michigan and is made of Cedar and Buffalo calf. We knew immediately that this drum was a powerful healing tool for women and dedicated it to be a women’s only drum (no worries, fellows, we have plenty of hand drums to share if you want to join us in drumming).

It is a passion of ours to share the sacred medicine (healing properties/message) of drumming. Jamie is Cherokee so we make and play Native American style drums, but we also share what we have learned about drums and drumming throughout many cultures since the beginning of humanity. We teach what we have learned from our elders and peers including drum etiquette, respect, how to care for a drum, how to approach and play a drum (especially a Mother Drum), and to share songs that we have learned on our journey. Interacting with a Mother Drum requires respect and reverence and is also a lot of FUN!

Kindly note that this is NOT a typical ‘drum circle in the park’; you’re welcome to bring your own drum, shakers and rattles, but we ask that you follow along with our drumming techniques.

Jamie Allen & Alison Holmes of Earthen Moon are full time wanderers/wonderers, teachers/students and seekers/seers. They travel the country with their 4 dogs in search of beauty in all its forms. To learn more about their offerings, you can find them online:

Wheel of Fortune ~ Tarot Salon

Join us for this FREE event hosted by The Tarot Woman and Lady Shadow Rabbit!  In our Tarot salon, we invite experienced readers to work together in discussing the card THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE.  2017 is a Wheel of Fortune + Magician year in the Tarot.  We will be giving each other readings so bring your cards!

Picking back up with our regular tarot readers' workshop salon, this month we will focus on the (TWO!) cards of the year: The Wheel of Fortune and The Magician. (2+0+1+7=10=1)
The Wheel represents the cycles of time, wherein posts of power, oppression, stagnation, and innovation are eternally revolving. Sometimes the Wheel seems stuck for generations, old paradigms of ignorance and passé notions appearing to last unbearably long, causing us to lose hope. In a long forgotten chasm, The Wheel's handle rusts in place...
BUT THEN....along comes a curious traveler, their presence mysterious and electrifying, a satchel of tools gleaming at their waist. The MAGICIAN has arrived!!! With precise, charismatic grandeur, their arms fly out of their dark and iridescent cape. One finger points to the star-filled galaxies overhead, one points adjacently to the glittering stones and rustling leaves beneath. "As Above, So Below!" cries the magician, and a bolt of lightning strikes their skyward fingertip, illuminating their entire body and shooting out of the lower finger, into the earth. The chasm once again sparks, tingles, and sings with potential. The Magician now reaches for the handle of the Wheel...and with the force of the cosmos, pulls it down. The Wheel of Fortune is spinning once again, and nothing will ever be the same.

•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Free and open to Moderate - Advanced tarot readers, bring any decks you'd like to read with, notebooks for jotting ideas, and any magickal mojo you'd like to put on the "Magician in the Wheel" altar as you claim your own power within the massive shifts of the Wheel in motion. Closing guided meditation at @empress_vintage. An awesome note- once again, the Chinese Zodiac perfectly aligns with the tarot card of the year. The Fire Rooster is calling...a new day has arrived.

Imbolc: A Celebration of the Return of Spring w/ Readings by Wanderer's Tarot

In honor of Imbolc, which is the celebration of the return of spring, we are having a fire out back in the Empress Garden with and altar and an open ritual space. We are featuring Wanderer's Tarot {LOCAL TAROT DECK MAKER!} in the front window for readings.

Sliding scale: $15-$35 for 15-30 minute readings.

About Casey Zabala, creator of Wanderer's Tarot:

Casey Zabala is a native Bay Area artist, writer, and tarot reader. Her self published tarot deck, Wanderer's Tarot, is a feminist deck for modern witches. With 13 years of tarot experience, Casey has a studied and intuitive approach to her readings, while incorporating aspects of natural magic and manifestation techniques to her offerings. Passionate about mystical and magical arts, Casey hopes to do her part to heal the collective through individual tarot readings and artistic explorations.

FIRST TUESDAY W/ CARLA STARLA

Miss Starla is an experienced and certified Meditation teacher and Clairvoyant reader for children and adults, providing classes and personal sessions over the past two decades to co-usher in an overall spiritual growing awareness to the world around us.

Finding power in creating original music and songwriting she formed and managed a group called Stereotypes in '94 and performed in the Midwest rave circuits working with groups like VBNTS Chicago and Eclectic Grooves. She has also played with greats like Del the Funky Homosapien, Maseo of De La Sol. A decision to start djing in '98 came from her passionate love for house music. Finding a niche in singing and djing, DJ Carla Starla was born.

For the past 17 years, she has been doing just that. She has played pretty much every bar in Chicago alongside DJs Paul Johnson, Kaskade, DJ Heather, Lady D, DJ Collette, DJ Fortune, and Kaminanda, just to name a few. She has also been a consistent guest DJ for the Freakeasy Crew in Chicago, Club Divine, Burning Man festivals and several regionals, Brilliantly Mad events, and Resonate Chicago. For the past six years she has been the resident DJ and Co Facilitator Chi Ka Go, an event that fuses dance, music, art, healing, and poetry.
