Autumn Equinox Celebration

Autumn Equinox Celebration

Come join us in sacred community to celebrate the Autumnal Equinox! The Fall “celebrates the second harvest and the start of winter preparations. It is the time to respect the impending dark while giving thanks to the sunlight.” We will set our intentions through the magic of the Tarot, do a honoring ritual, call in the seven directions, perform an invocation and a releasing ritual. **We will be having a fire so if you have a sensitivity to smoke please note these will be the conditions of the ritual.

Some ideas to heighten the experience,

*Bring an offering for the alter a crystal, stone, feather, poem, confession, a flower, a herb or whatever your heart desires. Know you can take these items home after.

*Dress in something devotional if that feels right for you.

*Write down a passage or confession that you'd like to offer to the ritual and ceremony.

What is the Autumnal Equinox?

The autumnal equinox happens the moment the sun crosses the celestial equator, which is an imaginary line in the sky that corresponds to Earth’s equator.

“Equinox” comes from the Latin words “equi” meaning “equal” and “nox” meaning “night.” This implies that there will be equal amounts of daylight and darkness, however such is not exactly the case.

There are two equinoxes annually, vernal and autumnal, marking the beginning of spring and fall. They are opposite for the northern and southern hemispheres.

In China the September equinox is celebrated during the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival. The bounty of summer’s harvest is celebrated and the festivities are rampant with moon cakes, round pastries made from bean paste and other sweet and/or savory ingredients.

BIO

Laura Zuspan is an artist and seer. Magic and art are her guiding forces; what most interests her in these realms are transformations in consciousness. Her artistic and intuitive practice is to facilitate collaborative healing ceremonies, ritual awakenings, and the development of inner vision to feed and inspire the spirit. In this practice Laura draws on the ancient book of Tarot, and on practical life coaching techniques. She received her BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and has shown her art internationally. She has studied Buddhism at Insight Meditation Center, Green Gulch Farm Zen Center, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep in Thailand and trained at the Niroga Institute in yoga outreach. Influenced by the work of Joanna Macy, Linda Montano, Angeles Arrien and Dipa Ma, Laura is interested in shifting the way we understand ‘Tarot’ into a functional and ethical tool for individual insight and empowerment. Laura recently opened a private reading room to see clients privately located in central Oakland. She is currently creating her own tarot deck through watercolor painting.

Timeless Self * Workshop with Amadia Shadow Rabbit

"In this workshop I'll guide participants thru active exploration of the relationship to & communication with parts of our selves existing across time; utilizing a combination of creative therapy, hypnotherapy, transpersonal psychotherapy, & imaginal conjuring methods.

Beyond our current perceived ages, our psyche is in fact comprised of a very nonlinear complex of perinatal, infant, child, adolescent, adult, & elder psychology, developed at varying stages along our lifetimes. We also carry projected images of our future selves. Our subconscious mind provides a timeless access to these many facets of inner worlds.

I'll share some of the fascinating psychological research done on this topic, more ancient practices of inner journeying, then lead us thru several exercises where we will revisit & communicate withyounger versions of ourself that may hold important information for your present, or may need assistance with healing to enable integration with your current sense of self. We will also experiment with envisioning & contacting our future elder selves, opening to their guidance in the forms of wisdom or foresight that may be useful "North Stars" down our paths."  ~Amadia Shadow Rabbit

Amadia Shadow Rabbit is a southern conjurer, now based in the bay, who's magick practice and craft focus on Communing with Spirits of the Natural World, Dream Work, Creativity and Sacred Drag as Divine Play, Shadow Work, Using Divination and Hypnotherapy to access other realms, gain insight into the forces in our lives, and regain the knowledge of our souls across lifetimes.

She has studied, taught, and practiced tarot and other forms of divination for over a decade.

Splendor All Around is a collective of musicians, artists, technicians and documentarians that performs and tours in a 1986 International diesel school bus called Splendor.  Splendor has taken three extended tours along the West Coast, breaking down numerous times and playing over 50 shows in caves, driveways, squat houses, churches, and, of course, the bus.  Hosting numerous traveling artists, Splendor All Around consists of a core of ~20 artists primarily from the SF Bay Area, South East and New York City.

In 2016, Splendor All Around will be releasing a documentary feature covering the first three tours.  Our hope is to pioneer an artist-friendly hack to the music-industrial complex– laying out big maps, cutting through the Rocky Mountains, and bringing Splendor to the Eastern seaboard. ALCATRAZ TAROT SALON - XVII THE MOON

In this Tarot based workshop we will focus on one of the three cosmic Major Arcana- The Moon. In the Tarot and most occult schools of wisdom, the Moon represents our Mercurial Inner Worlds- often untapped emotional depths, dream worlds, shadow selves moving always in the potent sea of subconscious truth. The Moon represents what is cyclical yet constant in life. The Moon also holds Divine Goddess/ Elder Femme wisdom we all carry within and call on in times of need. The Moon illuminates what is often hidden, calls forth the spirits of darkness to tell their stories upon the velvet carpet of midnight.

We will discuss the role of the archetypal Moon in the tarot, engage in a few workshop exercises, trade Moon based readings, and end in a guided meditation at Empress Vintage.

FOR MODERATE TO ADVANCED EXPERIENCED TAROT READERS. This event is not an introductory class or to offer readings to the public.

Summer Solstice Celebration

Come join us in scared community to celebrate the summer solstice! The summer solstice is one of the most powerful days to celebrate and honor your solar power and the light within you. We will set our intentions through the magic of the Tarot, do a manifestation ritual, call in the four directions, perform an invocation and a releasing ritual.

What is the Summer Solstice?

The timing of the solstice depends on when the Sun reaches its northernmost point from the equator. The word solstice is from the Latin solstitium, from sol (sun) and stitium (to stop), reflecting the fact that the Sun appears to stop at this time (and again at the winter solstice).

The summer solstice ritual is one of the most popular events I host each year pre-registration is highly encouraged. register here: http://laurazuspan.bigcartel.com/product/summer-solstice-celebrationhttp://laurazuspan.bigcartel.com/product/summer-solstice-celebration

KID TRAILS

Oakland's Kid Trails is the brainchild of Oakland's Patrick Jeffords, who writes and performs all instruments for Kid Trails, with the exception of drums, which are handled by Andy Woodward. Jeffords moved to Oakland about two years to make music with some high profile friends in the local scene, but I'll let the quality of his work stand on its own for now. Kid Trails makes fuzzy, dark pop that sounds not quite like anything out there today, although it did make me think of that great Edwyn Collins track from 20 years ago.

Vintage, Tea & Tarot in the Empress Garden featuring Star Sight Tarot

JOIN US on Saturday, 12pm-4pm!  We will be serving Niuka Tea and having a big sale in the garden!  Plus Tarot readings by Star Sight Tarot!  Can't wait to see you there!

I use the tarot as a transformative tool for discernment, practical advice, and empowerment. I've been reading tarot for over 10 years and consider myself to be of the "new generation" of tarot readers who do not claim to be psychic, but instead help clients to make their own choices and come to their own conclusions about their life paths through the mediating assistance of the tarot and other practices.

Star sights are measurements taken between a star and the horizon that help travelers to navigate over land and sea. I use the tarot in a similar way - as a navigational tool that helps to keep us on course when we feel we've gone astray.

MOTHER DRUM Workshop in The Empress Garden

MOTHER DRUM Workshop in The Empress Garden

Mother Drum Teaching & Session  ~  Sunday, April 9, 2-4 p.m.

Led by Earthen Moon (Jamie Allen & Alison Holmes)

Empress Vintage, 1757 Alcatraz Avenue, Berkeley, CA

$15-30 sliding scale; no one turned away for lack of funds

Every beat of a drum echoes the beat of a heart and has the power to take us back to the first sound we heard, in the womb – our mother’s own heartbeat. The drumbeat can take us on many powerful journeys when we slow down, breathe and listen with our whole selves.

A Mother Drum (sometimes called a Council or People’s Drum) is big enough for several people to sit around and play together simultaneously. Playing a Mother Drum with a group of people is a centering and unifying experience.

Our Mother Drum comes from the Ojibwe people of northern Michigan and is made of Cedar and Buffalo calf. We knew immediately that this drum was a powerful healing tool for women and dedicated it to be a women’s only drum (no worries, fellows, we have plenty of hand drums to share if you want to join us in drumming).

It is a passion of ours to share the sacred medicine (healing properties/message) of drumming. Jamie is Cherokee so we make and play Native American style drums, but we also share what we have learned about drums and drumming throughout many cultures since the beginning of humanity. We teach what we have learned from our elders and peers including drum etiquette, respect, how to care for a drum, how to approach and play a drum (especially a Mother Drum), and to share songs that we have learned on our journey. Interacting with a Mother Drum requires respect and reverence and is also a lot of FUN!

Kindly note that this is NOT a typical ‘drum circle in the park’; you’re welcome to bring your own drum, shakers and rattles, but we ask that you follow along with our drumming techniques.

Jamie Allen & Alison Holmes of Earthen Moon are full time wanderers/wonderers, teachers/students and seekers/seers. They travel the country with their 4 dogs in search of beauty in all its forms. To learn more about their offerings, you can find them online:
